quilt for cameron grace

detailing: hand embroidered name and birth date, vine stitch

size: (approx.) 32" x 40"

mom and i made this one-piece quilt for my dearest childhood friend, lauren. lauren and rob are about to move. having never seen their nursery, mom and i decided to go bold and combine styles. we paired a traditional floral print with a modern japanese polka dot. quilted, embroidered and bound in a butter yellow. hope this works in the new nursery. i love you lauren. congratulations!

improv. quilt: update

this past summer, mom and i took a workshop on improvisational quilting w denyse schmidt. mom and i, having used the same two focus fabrics, pooled our 8 squares to create an improv. quilt. along with our (blindly-chosen) bright fabrics, we paired two neutral fabrics. both the front and back are patchwork. the quilt is hand-tied as well as machine quilted. it is nearly all done. just needs a bright binding.

our poor improv. quilt has been neglected since july. i do hope to bind it off soon, but thought i would go ahead and share some pictures.

my first quilt: progress

the new layout for my hand-sewn quilt
it may be the first quilt i started, but since i'm hand sewing, it probably won't be the first quilt i complete. especially if i keep changing the design. only 22 hourglasses to sew and 87 brown squares to cut before assembly starts.
finished size to be 78" x 64"
(for a full size bed, my full size bed)

workshop with denyse schmidt

mamma fergustuff and i took an improvisational quilting workshop with denyse schmidt at the fabulous alewives fabrics and it was amazing. we drew fabric, eyes closed, piece by piece, out of paper bags marked 'small', 'medium' and 'large'. no straight edge, no pinning, no calculating. we created squares measuring (roughly) 16" x 16".

in the second half of class we were allowed to introduce our own focus fabric. mom and i shared ours and as a result have 8 squares (not seen above) we are going to use in a lap quilt. more to come...
