this past summer i took my very first machine knitting course. it was amazing. the classese were taught by the talented and patient kathryn malik and jordana martin at the textile arts center in brooklyn. the studio was beautiful and instruction even better.
originally i had thought this sweater would make a nice birthday gift for mom, but after blocking it a bit too agressively, the now slightly felted and quite shrunken cardigan didn't exactly fit right. it was a learning experience...

post a comment i have been on a wool and the gang kick lately. i know, i know, i've been cheating on purl. i blame my friend renee. i bought my first watg kit, stripy coco mariniere, in order to participate in a knit-along brunch watg hosted few weekends ago. renee and i went and knit and laughed and ate and a few mimosas later i was buying my second kit, lil' joe. pictures of that to come.

i recently got a new gig with purl soho. i am now helping with purl's blog, the purl bee. my very first assignment for the bee was to assist the beautiful and hilarious whitney (of whit's knits) with a baby fair isle cardigan. i knit the newborn size, the white one!

i recently found out that i'm going to be an auntie, again! ok, well, technically i guess i am going to be a cousin, but with a 29 year age gap let's just say aunt. oh, and when i say 29 years, i mean exactly that. the babe's due date is august 12th, my (potentially our shared) birthday!
i figure, same birthday, same(ish) sweater. i have a few other projects to finish up before i can start on this one, but stay tuned... plus a year from now, you might just see the two of us strolling through brooklyn in our matching knitwear.
congrats ash and henry!
i love you, all three.

pattern: i kind of winged it.
i started with a provisional cast on and first knit the bottom of the back up and over the shoulders. i casted off for the neck. i knit the right and left front panels separately, shoulder down, increasing on center edges. once at the desired length, put the fronts on stitch holders. i picked up the live stitches along the fronts and back, overlapping at the sides and center front. then ribbed down.
make what you will of that terribly brief explanation, but it was quick and fun and very very soft. other than occasionally feeling like a jedi, i just love wearing this cozy vest!
stitches: stockinnet at body and 1x1 ribbing at bottom
yarn: cascade's baby alpaca chunky / color: mocha
needles: us7, us8

2 comments i finally have photographs of my stripped cardigan (thanks mom). i finished it about a month ago and was thrilled to wear it this past holiday season. the bright green stripe proved to be a fun surprise to people.

3 comments so, i've inherited an unfinished sweater from mom. if it didn't fit me so beautifully, i would be super disappointed in her apathetic attitude about finishing what she started. to finish up, all that i have to do is make some buttons and sew on the already knit pocket.
yarn: stone hedge fiber mill's shepherd's worsted (same yarn as my very first sweater)
(sweater was photographed on a new duvet cover for the maine house. nani iro's saaaaaaa.)

2 comments posts have been few and far between this past month, for i have been knitting my very first sweater (and thus, not producing much else.) it is finally completed. i learned a ton. mostly patience, while re-doing the collar for the 2nd (3rd and 4th) time. although the season has nearly passed for such attire, i look forward to sporting my new sweater while i still can.
pattern: zephyr style's mary jane sweater (heavily modified). puffy short-sleeves, snake skin stitch stripes.
yarn: stone hedge fiber mill's shepherd's wool / worsted weight / pewter
